So this popped up on my facebook feed. It’s a newborn foals hooves! Those little fingers in the first photo have many nicknames but are called ”eponychium” from what I’ve read it’s very soft and rubbery and exist to not hurt the mother. The second photo is the same hooves 24 hours later so they wear off quickly!
“his eponychium is a soft epidermis cushion covering the tip of each hoof that protects a mare’s uterus and genital tract from damage while pregnant and during foaling. Once the foal has been born, these break off and the hooves rapidly harden.”
I couldn’t not post this! Found it fascinating!
thats so cool! I’ve never heard that before!
I was terrified when I first saw the pic lol. Very cool!
We had a mare when I was in school who LOVED eating her foals’ eponichium. When she had Queso we were all there, she stands up, nuzzles him, then just crunches on his feet. We were horrified until the manager explained she did this every year.
OH MY GOD THAT HAD TO HAVE BEEN TERRIFYING. Don’t mind me while I just munch on my babies toesies.
